ALEX MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS PRESENTED AT AUGUST LUNCHEON

Congratulations to our 2006 Alex Memorial Scholarship winners – Elaine Myers Hammond and Joann Seery, accepting for her daughter. The first Alex Memorial Scholarship was awarded in 1998. Since that time, more than a dozen members and/or their children have benefited.

The Alex Memorial Scholarship fund was established in 1997 to further enhance the Network's commitment to provide women in Hawaii with the opportunity to obtain support from other like-minded women in the pursuit of their professional and business goals. What better opportunity can we provide than education?

The scholarship was established in honor of Alex, the niece of past PWN president Beth Busch.  Alex, who loved life and showed great promise, died of leukemia at age six. She did not have the opportunity to pursue a higher education or a professional career.  By naming the scholarship after Alex, the Board of Directors felt we would honor her memory by providing the opportunity for PWN members (or their children) to pursue their educational goals.

The scholarship is currently funded from the proceeds of our semi-annual spa days. The next spa day is November 11. Please RSVP now by sending an e-mail to reservations at PWNHawaii.org or by using your credit card online, (We use Paypal as our secure credit-card processor online. )

Editor’s Notepad:

For quite a number of years, I have wished that I could take some of my priceless (to me) treasures to be appraised on PBS’ Antique Road Show. On August 26, my wish came true. (Back in March, I saw a promotional announcement that the show was coming to Honolulu this summer and names would be drawn at random from those who sent in a request for tickets. I was one of the lucky ones since tickets the week before the event each sold for a $200 donation.) I had two free tickets in hand, and they would appraise only two items per ticket. So, I encouraged my son to join me knowing that he probably didn’t have anything to appraise. He was anxious to see what my items were worth and agreed to stand in line with me for two plus hours. In exchange for his company, I put up with his wise cracks. Example: He saw a few people he knew while standing in line. When they asked what he had brought to the show, he replied, “My mother.” His sense of humor kept us and those around us entertained making the time go faster. The two items I gave him to take to the appropriate appraisers were a toy wind-up mouse from the 1920 – 1930s; and a Tiffany silver, monogrammed cup that was a gift to my parents when I was born. (Anyone who has watched the Antique Road Show knows that anything really made by Tiffany is worth something.) I clutched an enameled, bell-shaped pendant watch I was sure had been in my grandmother’s possession when she arrived at Ellis Island in the 1890s, and a hand-tooled, leather-covered version of The Song of Hiawatha that contained no publishing date. In my freshman year at Elmira College, upstate New York, I worked in the college library. Someone had died and left their personal library to the college. Part of my job was to sort the donated books and set most of them up for sale. I found this little book in the collection and it intrigued me. I loved reading The Song of Hiawatha and the leather cover was unique. I paid 25 cents for it. That was in 1957. I carried this book from Elmira, New York to my home in Monticello, New York. It stayed there until I completed college and took my first job in radio in Patchogue on Long Island. The book traveled with me from there to Phoenix, Denver, San Diego, LA, back to Phoenix, Pittsburgh, and eventually, to Hawaii. The leather cover was gradually turning to dust. The leather drawstrings that held this little tome had completely deteriorated from our humidity and heat. I approached the appraiser with great hopes that I had a valuable book in my possession. He gingerly turned a few of the pages, brushing the leather dust from his hands. He looked up at me and quietly said, “This book is worth (long pause) absolutely nothing.”

I was crushed at first. Then I realized that he knew nothing of its real value. After all, it held my dreams for almost 50 years.

My son had a few stories to share about his experiences with the appraisers and the cup and the mouse. (If you’d like to know what they were, and the truth about the watch, please ask me. I’ll share the appraisers’ comments and the item values.) All in all, we had a most interesting afternoon and now I can’t wait for The Antique Road Show to return. I have a few other treasures that I just know are worth a lot – at least to me.

Treasure your memories and your keepsakes as they will always be worth something – to you.

LYNN GREINER (Happy Hawaii Homes) recently moved into her new Ko Olina condo at the Coconut Plantation and is enjoying life at the beach. She also moved brokerage firms. She is now at Happy Hawaii Homes to continue searching for more investment properties. If you know of anyone who wants to sell a home or condo, let her know!

SUSAN AIU (Susan Aiu Astrology) says she is now living at the top of the Island, the Pico as it were. “I am in the top floor of a senior home in Wahiawa, facing a forest, and lots of roosters. My new companion is Mitzi, a black kitten with white paws and black pads. Her face has been looking back at me from a Scottish tea cup for some time. She was turned in as a stray to a nearby animal hospital and would have been sent to the Humane Society, until I said she could come home with me. She thinks she's died and gone to heaven, at least four floors up. She likes to play at 4 a.m., and watch TV, is learning the meaning of the word NO, and has great fun exploring under, over and across the furniture. While my Astro newsletter goes out weekly, I still need help with my Web site to get it back up and running. If anyone can give me a hand with that, please let me know. My daily AstroLine can be called at 948 - 0172 and I am still on KSSK at 3 p.m. Mondays with Dick Wainwright with the weekly forecast. And remember, Psychic Fairs are held on the 3rd Sunday of each month at the Maunakea Marketplace in Chinatown, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mini readings are $15 for astrology, tarot, palmistry, and psychic. Come have a complete metaphysical.”

AMBER RICCI (Amber Net) invites us all to come and dance, have a drink, and meet new people at Jazz Minds Café (1661 Kapiolani Blvd.), September 26. Amber will be entertaining with piano virtuoso Dan Del Negro and special guest artists all night, 9 p.m. – midnight. Cover charge: $7.

PAM HERRINGTON (Platinum Mortgage Partners) sent us these pictures (see below) from her daughter Alex’s wedding at the Ko ‘Olina resort on July 28. We wouldn’t have known that the entire rest of the Island was under flood watches that day! The grounds of the resort were windy and there were some slight mists until about an hour before the wedding. Then, 30 minutes before the ceremony there was only a slight breeze, with the sun coming out for the ceremony and Mother Nature providing big, beautiful puffy clouds for the sunset pictures. It was quite a beautiful event!

AUGUST LUNCHEON RECAP

by Liane Blake, Smith Barney

Dr. Richard Schuttler, Organizational Troubleshooter, spoke to us at the August 2006 luncheon. With more than 20 years of experience in the arena of management and leadership improvement, Dr. Schuttler shared some of his wisdom regarding working in groups and team structure.

Tips on working together in groups include:

Team Stages:

  1. Forming – people come together, assess other members, figure out where they fit in, and form relationships.
  2. Storming – members try to do it their way, members attempt to assert authority, conflict emerges.
  3. Norming – members begin to like each other and begin to be productive.
  4. Performing – jobs/tasks are getting accomplished at this stage.
  5. Adjourning – the group often disbands after task is accomplished.

Many PWN members provided feedback that they enjoyed Dr. Schuttler’s presentation and found it to be relevant and helpful to their individual situations. Additionally, Dr. Schuttler donated one of his books to be given away as a prize for our monthly drawing.
